One of the most popular island destinations in the Mediterranean, Sardinia - located off the coast of Italy and in very close proximity to the French island of Corsica - is a picturesque island known for it's sunny climate and delicious cuisine.  Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is a busy cruise-ship port and marina destination that has a number of historical sights and large resort hotels.  The Cagliari Cathedral, the Castello district, the Elephant Tower and the Basilica di San Saturnino are amongst the key attractions in the capital.  The Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage listed nuraghe site, is also popular, as are the towns of Sassari, Oristano, Alghero, Olbia, Nuoro and Porto Torres.

There are three major airports in Sardinia, the largest being Cagliari-Elmas Airport (with carriers British Airways, bmi and easyJet amongst those flying into the complex), followed by Fertilia Airport (near Alghero, with flights from Ryanair amongst the services) and Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (bmi, easyJet, Ryanair).  Sardinia is also reached by ferry from Palermo, Napoli, Livorno, Trapani, Genova, Fiumicino, Salerno, Piombino, and Civitavecchia in Italy; Marseilles and Toulon in France; and Porto Vecchio, Ajaccio, Propriano in Corsica.  Car hire facilities are located at all of these transportation hubs and is highly recommended for exploring the large island - particularly as the railway connections around the region have a reputation for being incredibly slow.  Rental companies that operate in the region include Budget, Dollar/Thrifty, Auto-Europa, Easy Car and Mida Rent.  Summers are hot in Sardinia so it is recommended you invest in car air-conditioning.
